It is so easy to get wrapped up in the work we do. As a business owner, you’re constantly working to book more clients, improve your photography skills, improve your client experience, network with vendors and venues, etc etc etc. So many of us became photographers because we fell in love with the art of photography. But, that spark can oftentimes get lost when you’re shooting to support yourself and keep your business afloat.
So how do you bring creativity back into your life?
Creative projects.
Before you tell me you have zero time to focus on a project just for the fun of it, hear me out. Believe me, I know it can be hard to find the time to work on a personal project. But here’s the thing: working on shooting something for the pure joy of it will enhance the quality of your other work. It’s a win-win.
I’ll give you an example:
Last year, a friend of mine hosted a llama themed baby shower (which was absolutely adorable). Instantly, something inside of me lit up and I was inspired to photograph llamas. I did some research, found a llama farm near Austin, and spent 2-3 hours hanging out with llamas right before sunset. I even went really outside of my comfort zone and flexed some new creative muscles by renting a film camera, which wasn’t something I did for my everyday workflow.
The entire experience was amazing. And that experience brought more joy, creativity, and inspiration into my everyday work.
Not only that, but it inspired me to launch a print shop (!!!) to share my llama photos and other photos I have shot while traveling.
So, what have you been inspired to shoot, but haven’t made the time to do it? I encourage you to sit down and think about what you want to photograph. Maybe it’s a styled shoot. Or a theme in the wedding world that you love, but none of your clients are doing. Or maybe you want to do something completely outside of your industry as I did.
Whatever it is, put it on the calendar and make it happen.
I want to hear about your creative project! Comment below and tell me about it 🙂
